Highline Leash - Part 4 - Climbing Your Leash

When you first start highlining, taking a leash fall is almost guaranteed. This should be expected and if your highline is setup correctly, it should be very safe as well. But, how the heck do you get back up to the line when that inevitable leash fall happens?! You are about to find out!

Okay, so you've taken your leash fall and you are just dangling at the end of your leash out in the middle of space. Memories of middle school gym class are coming to your head. Don't fret! There is a SUPER easy technique that you can use to climb the leash that will allow you to get back up without much effort at all. Just follow the steps below and you will be back on top of that highline in no time:

Step 1

When you are dangling at the end of your leash, lean back and bring your strong foot to your crotch, on top of the leash.


Step 2

Step 2 Step 2
While pressing with your strong foot on the leash, hand-over-hand up the leash.


Step 3

Step 3 Step 3
Grab on to the slackline and hang. Ideally, your leash should be fairly short so that the climb is not that far. See Slack Science - Highline Leash Part 1 - Material and Characteristics for more information.


Step 4

Step 4 Step 4
Kick your strong leg over the top of the slackline, rotating your body around the line.


Step 5

Step 5 Step 5
Try and maintain your balance while rotating and end up sitting on top of the line. This is called the mantle.


Step 6

Step 6 Step 6
Either do a Chongo Start, or scoot back to the beginning of the line.


Following the above steps, you will easily be able to climb your leash and get back on the slackline to have another attempt. This is great for avoiding getting super tired from trying to recover after a leash fall, which is what happened to me my first couple of times highlining.

  • Thanks for all your articles and videos. I’m just starting to high line and been getting comfortable getting back on the line. But I’ve still been keeping the lines low enough. Now having read your leash technique I look forward to to going higher.
